You're Not Alone
by Michael McLean
This was a really popular song when I was growing up. I had the cassette tape, and played it often. Many nights I'd just sing the words to myself as I cried myself to sleep. I sure felt alone on those long, dark nights (See my other post, Beating the Numbers). This song was a big comfort.
No matter how alone I felt, I knew there was always one person I could reach out to. God. He understood me. He loved me. He would listen. At least I hoped he would. I did go through a phase where I completely felt abandoned by God. I was so angry that He let this terrible thing happen to me. I decided not to pray for a while. It felt like he hadn't heard me anyway. He hadn't helped me. At least not when I thought I needed the help. Little did I realize that He did send help. He sent his son (See My Beliefs).
That was a dark, lonely time without prayer. Because of my own choice, I really did isolate myself. But God never left me. This song helped me remember that. This song gave me hope for brighter tomorrows. This song helped bring me back to God. No matter how angry I was, no matter how much pain I felt, I knew God loved me. I couldn't deny that. He felt my pain. I started praying again, even though it was hard. He gave me the strength and the courage to keep going even when I didn't want to. He blessed me to know that others loved me too, and that I was indeed NOT ALONE.
You’re not alone,
Even when you’re feeling on your own,
You are loved in ways that can’t be shown;
Your needs are known;
You’re not alone.
And when you cry,
You’re just letting go of heartache deep inside,
And tomorrow there’ll be sunshine and sky
and love close by;
You’re not alone.
And we know that it’s not easy,
But we know that it won’t last,
’cause one that loves you more than me
Is sending blessings fast.
You’re not alone,
say it one more time,
“I’m not alone,”
And even when it’s hard to find the words,
our prayers are heard;
We’re not alone.
You’re not alone.
